USAAMB Mallet Audition Video

Mallet Audition Video 1 Guidelines (No Marching Required)

VIDEO INTENT: The intent of this video is to display your technique, rhythmic accuracy, musicality, poise, performance quality, reading ability, facial expression, and overall ability as a mallet player.

VIDEO CONTENT

Audition: Submit the best recording of you playing each exercise from the mallet audition music posted on the NAfME Web site at the tempos indicated on the music. You may compile separate recordings of the various excerpts from the mallet audition music, but only include “start-to-finish” examples of each excerpt. Do not splice together bits of any given excerpt. You will only be able to upload one video for this part of the audition, so all exercises of the Video 1 music must be compiled to one video.

AUDITION INSTRUMENT: You may audition on either marimba or vibraphone for this segment of the audition.

Music: Applicants must use the All-American Mallet Audition music from the NAfME Web site for this segment. No other music should be used. Submit your best take of a “start-to-finish” recording of each excerpt from the posted audition music. Segments should not be overdubbed or edited in any way. Music can be found on the NAfME Web site at www.menc.org/v/band/u-s-army-all-american-marching-band-audition

ADJUDICATION: Judges will consider technique, rhythmic accuracy, musicality, poise, performance quality, reading ability, facial expression, and overall ability as a mallet player.

VIDEO UPLOAD: Go to http://aamb.opusevent.com and click "New User" to create your application and upload your audition videos.

Video Production Tips

Camera Distance: Back your camera up enough to show the entire keyboard throughout the audition. Face the camera while playing.

Video Format: Flash (.flv) is the easiest and recommended video format for audition upload (see conversion ideas below)
Other Acceptable Video Formats: wmv, avi, mov, mpg, mpeg and mp4

File size restriction for uploading video: Video compression rates should be roughly 9 seconds per 1 MB. If your file is larger than 100 MB, then you should open it in your video editing software and export it to a new, compressed file with one of the accepted formats and a higher compression setting.

Some Sites to convert a video file to Flash (.flv) – (for your convenience, following are only a few resources available for video conversion. MENC does not endorse or warrant any products or information on these Web sites)

  1. http://media-convert.com/ – Free site – no download necessary
  2. http://download.cnet.com – free site to convert or compress
  3. Upload your video to YouTube - then go to http://keepvid.com and download as Flash file (.flv)
