There are many ways to set up a band. Maybe you've noticed colleagues do it differently than you do. Some put flutes only in the front row. Others have flutes and clarinets splitting the front row, with some of both in the second row. Is it a matter of preference, strategic placement, or both?
As MENC mentor Mindy Scheierman said in the MENC forum, "Seating is never absolute, always changing, and is all about the sound. Factors of seating include the hall/rehearsal room, strength of players, and instrumentation. Always do what's best for the overall ensemble sound."
Your regular set-up might not be the best way to present your current repertoire. Never venturing beyond your comfort level can stifle creativity and judgment. Consider changing your seating as you rehearse a piece.
