A Chat With Anthony Maiello, Part Two

Read part one of this interview with the conductor of the 2010 MENC National Honor Concert Band.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing band directors right now?

Our students are drawn in so many directions with numerous opportunities. Every good teacher wants his/her students to excel to the highest level possible. Performing a musical instrument requires building skills. Developing musical skills takes time, energy, dedication, endurance, persistence and hard work. Since our world moves at an incredible pace, it is important for students to realize that certain skills take methodical patience and are not "instant or ready made" like many of the things in our daily lives. Music performance does not happen overnight, but takes years of study, hard work and a lifetime of dedication. The final result, the making of music, is a reward beyond what words can describe. This is the magic of music.

Is there anything you are hoping to personally accomplish during the MENC National Honor Ensembles?

My goal for the students is to give them the best musical experience possible. For myself, my goal is to learn as much as possible from them.

What effect do you foresee the Honor Ensembles having over the long term?

Honor ensembles are a positive motivational vehicle for our young musicians as long as they operate in a positive, nurturing manner.

After the Honor Ensembles, what's next for you?

To continue to share music with as many people as possible, no matter what age or what level of performance. I am blessed to be able to travel world wide as a conductor, clinician, adjudicator and educator. Each and every time I come into contact with another human being, I believe it is an opportunity to share the joy, magic and thrill of music. What more could anyone ask for in this life?
