U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on Narrowing the Curriculum

Category: Document
Issue(s) Addressed: Supporting the school environment for learning
Supporting learning in other subjects
Long-term success of students

Attribution

Quoted in NEA Today, August/September 2009, page 28

Item Text

"I worry a lot about the narrowing of the curriculum and the arts being lost under NCLB in the past. It’s so important that all of our students have exposure, particularly at a young age, to arts, music, dance, drama, sports, whatever it might be, and find their interest and find their passion."

Secretary Duncan went on to discuss

  • the correlation between doing well in music and doing well in math,
  • his desire to push against the narrowing of the curriculum and to encourage school districts to provide students a well-rounded education,
  • how a broad, well-rounded education will engage students more in school and help reduce dropout rates,
  • how do we give students a broad range of experiences so they can find and pursue their passion in life.
