The standards for music contained in National Standards for Arts Education1 suggest what every student in America should know and be able to do in music. Opportunity-to-Learn Standards for Music Instruction: Grades PreK—122 suggest what types and levels of support are necessary to achieve the content standards. The performance standards presented here suggest what levels of proficiency should be expected of students. These three publications provide a comprehensive set of recommendations concerning the school music program for the coming decade. Together, they offer a vision for a new curriculum in music, a statement of what will be required to achieve that vision, and a means for determining when that vision has been realized.
