MENC Book Proposal Requirements

Thank you for your interest in publishing a book with MENC: The National Association for Music Education.

We welcome book proposals that fulfill MENC’s mission to advance music education for all, that serve MENC’s policies, and that encompass at least one element of the MENC Strategic Plan (advocacy; music education recruitment, retention, preparation and professional development; curriculum, and standards based assessment models and strategies).

What we will need from you:

Proposal information submitted electronically in Word format (details below).

Send to: Pat Woofter, Book Coordinator, MENC, at patw@menc.org. In the event you experience any problems in submitting your proposal, write to info@menc.org.

Be sure your proposal submission includes:

  1. An introductory statement outlining:
    • how this book would fit MENC's strategic plan, and contribute to the advancement of music education

    • who the target audience is for this book, and how they would benefit from it

    • if other books on this topic have been published in the last 3 – 4 years; if so, an explanation how your book would be different, why it would be better and why it would be needed

  2. Note if any part of the book has been published previously. If so, outline where, when and by what press. If it was published, indicate if written permission to use copyrighted materials will need to be obtained.

    a. Indicate if you have submitted either this manuscript or a revised version of it to another publisher. MENC cannot consider any manuscript that is submitted simultaneously to other publishers or organizations.

  3. List chapter titles/headings, and a synopsis of what each chapter will cover. Please include ideas for photographs, illustrations appendix, index, etc.

  4. Submit 1–3 chapters (if you have them), maximum.

NOTE: Items 1 through 4 should be prepared and submitted in blind-copy format. The removal of the author’s name and affiliations from these materials will ensure that the author remains anonymous as the proposal is reviewed.

  5. A separate page with author bio/resume. List any previous publishing experience and qualifications to write on the topic.

  6. A separate page with your contact information: your full name, title, mailing address, fax, email, phone numbers.

NOTE: Turn around time is typically 6–8 weeks from the time we receive your submission. We will email to notify you that we have received your materials.
