Proposals must be postmarked by April 15, 2006. (Information about performing group applications and deadlines is also on this site.)

STUDENT OPPORTUNITY: 2006 NSBA STUDENT ELECTRONIC MUSIC COMPOSITION TALENT SEARCH – The postmark deadline is today, April 14, for the 2006 MENC/NSBA Student Electronic Music Composition Talent Search. The prize packages from MENC, Sibelius USA, and Carl Fischer are extraordinary resources for the winning composition students and their schools. GRANT OPPORTUNITY: ARTS EXCHANGES ON INTERNATIONAL ISSUES – The U.S. State Department announces an open competition for grants to implement programs using the arts to engage underserved youth in selected countries abroad, and foster linkages and build partnerships between U.S. and overseas non-profit arts and cultural organizations. These international arts exchange projects will encourage democracy building by demonstrating the opportunities for freedom of thought and expression and underscoring the importance of empowerment in an open society. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: SUMMER GUITAR WORKSHOPS – This summer a series of “Teaching Guitar in the Classroom” workshops will be offered at nine locations across the country. Sponsored by MENC, NAMM, and GAMA, the week-long workshops are open to MENC in-service music teachers grades 4-12 who would like to begin a guitar class or expand an existing guitar program in their schools. Admission includes a FREE guitar, 3 graduate credits, tuition and fees from Duquesne University, an assortment of guitar accessories, and guitar methods books and music – a total estimated value of $1800. New this year: Level II workshop designed to enhance and expand the skills of the music educator who has already completed Level I and is using guitar in a music program. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY: CAITLIN MERIE HURREY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS – Applications are now being accepted for the Caitlin Merie Hurrey Memorial Scholarship Fund, including a new $500 grant available to MENC Collegiate seniors in the spring of 2006. Two other scholarships are offered, one to a high school senior with a personal connection to Huntingtown (MD) Elementary and one to the son or daughter of an MENC member. MEMBER OPPORTUNITY: CALL FOR COMPOSITIONS – The New Choral Scores from the Americas Composition Competition is open to composers from the Americas under age 40. Two cash prizes will be awarded. Compositions must be original scores (not previously performed) for SATB choir (a cappella or with piano accompaniment), between 3 and 8 minutes in length. Submission deadline: May 1, 2006. Visit

PARTICIPATE: CALL FOR PAPERS TO EXPLORE MUSIC, SOCIAL JUSTICE -- MENC is co-sponsoring the Teachers College Columbia University International Conference on Music Education, Equity, and Social Justice, in New York City, October 6-8, 2006. The conference will disseminate research in music education that investigates issues of educational equity and social justice. A diversity of research approaches is sought, ranging from the philosophical to the empirical, addressing topics such as curriculum and teaching, policy and administration, teacher education, testing and assessment, formal and informal contexts, and performance practice.
