STUDENT OPPORTUNITY: 2006 NSBA STUDENT ELECTRONIC MUSIC COMPOSITION TALENT SEARCH – Sponsored by MENC and the National School Boards Association (NSBA), the Electronic Music Composition Talent Search recognizes outstanding compositions and is held to help influence school administrators to include or improve music technology in their schools’ curriculum. Entries are judged based on their aesthetic quality, effective use of electronic media, and the power of the composition and its presentation in communicating to school board members, administrators, and others, the excitement and

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: 2006 IAJE/MENC TEACHER TRAINING INSTITUTES – The International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) has joined forces with MENC to present two intensive 2-1/2 day Teacher Training Institutes: June 15-17 in Park City, Utah, and June 22-24 at the University of Delaware in Newark. The Institute package, including all instruction, a comprehensive notebook and supplemental resource materials, continuing education unit documentation reflecting 20 contact hours, and a certificate of completion, is priced at $235.00 – but just $185.00 for MENC members. GRANT OPPORTUNITY: MODEL PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND DISSEMINATION – The U.S. Department of Education announces a competition for a new set of “Model Program Development and Dissemination” grants for programs that integrate and strengthen music and other arts into the elementary and middle school curricula. The grants, which are given to local education agencies or to groups of organizations that must include a local education agency, average $250,000 per year (often for three years).
