STUDENT OPPORTUNITY: 2006 NSBA STUDENT ELECTRONIC MUSIC COMPOSITION TALENT SEARCH – Sponsored by MENC and the National School Boards Association (NSBA), the Electronic Music Composition Talent Search recognizes outstanding compositions and is held to help influence school administrators to include or improve music technology in their schools’ curriculum. Entries are judged based on their aesthetic quality, effective use of electronic media, and the power of the composition and its presentation in communicating to school board members, administrators, and others, the excitement and

school can become a Top Fundraising School and receive special recognition. The Top Fundraising School will be featured in a short news special and have the opportunity to participate in a Feed The Children truck drop delivering food to 400 families in the community.

2006-2007 MENC DIVISION CONFERENCES: INFORMATION NOW ONLINE! – Information on the upcoming MENC North Central, Southern, Northwest, and Eastern division conferences is now available at http://www.menc.org/conferences , including dates, locations, session proposal applications, honors groups information, and more.

PARTICIPATE: CALL FOR MEMBER PHOTOS – Send MENC a digital color photo of yourself for possible inclusion in a special display in the August 2006 issue of Teaching Music. Photos must be 300 dpi and no bigger than 4 by 6 inches. Send photos to angig@menc.org no later than April 14, 2006.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: 2006 IAJE/MENC TEACHER TRAINING INSTITUTES – The International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) has joined forces with MENC to present two intensive 2-1/2 day Teacher Training Institutes: June 15-17 in Park City, Utah, and June 22-24 at the University of Delaware in Newark. The Institute package, including all instruction, a comprehensive notebook and supplemental resource materials, continuing education unit documentation reflecting 20 contact hours, and a certificate of completion, is priced at $235.00 – but just $185.00 for MENC members. GRANT OPPORTUNITY: MODEL PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND DISSEMINATION – The U.S. Department of Education announces a competition for a new set of “Model Program Development and Dissemination” grants for programs that integrate and strengthen music and other arts into the elementary and middle school curricula. The grants, which are given to local education agencies or to groups of organizations that must include a local education agency, average $250,000 per year (often for three years). MENC is publishing a collection of assessments that teachers actually use in their classrooms -- for band, chorus, orchestra, general music, and specialized areas at all levels: elementary, middle school, and high school, especially those that address the National Standards. CLASSROOM RESOURCE: CABLE IN THE CLASSROOM – Set your VCR early! In celebration of Music In Our Schools Month, VH1 Music Studio will re-air “VH1 All Access Spotlight: U2” on Tuesday, March 28th at 4 a.m. ET/MT/PT. This episode takes viewers on an intimate journey behind the scenes and on the road as the band prepares for their highly anticipated world tour.
