PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: 2006 IAJE/MENC TEACHER TRAINING INSTITUTES – The International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) has joined forces with MENC to present two intensive 2-1/2 day Teacher Training Institutes: June 15-17 in Park City, Utah, and June 22-24 at the University of Delaware in Newark. The Institute package, including all instruction, a comprehensive notebook and supplemental resource materials, continuing education unit documentation reflecting 20 contact hours, and a certificate of completion, is priced at $235.00 – but just $185.00 for MENC members. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: SUMMER GUITAR WORKSHOPS – This summer a series of “Teaching Guitar in the Classroom” workshops will be offered at nine locations across the country. Sponsored by MENC, NAMM, and GAMA, the week-long workshops are open to MENC in-service music teachers grades 4-12 who would like to begin a guitar class or expand an existing guitar program in their schools. Admission includes a FREE guitar, 3 graduate credits, tuition and fees from Duquesne University, an assortment of guitar accessories, and guitar methods books and music – a total estimated value of $1800.

ADVOCACY TOOL: CRITICAL EVIDENCE: HOW THE ARTS BENEFIT STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT – A new resource published by the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) in collaboration with the Arts Education Partnership, of which MENC is a member. The piece responds to the needs of policymakers, educators, parents and advocates for fact-based, non-technical language documenting the most current and compelling research on the value of arts learning experiences. CLASSROOM RESOURCE: CABLE IN THE CLASSROOM -- Set your VCR early! VH1's 2005-2006 Cable in the Classroom series will air Part 2 of the “VH1 Save the Music Concert” on Tuesday, March 14, at 4 a.m. ET/MT/PT. This concert highlights a wide variety of musical performers. In celebration of Music In Our Schools Month, VH1 Music Studio will re-air “VH1 Storytellers: Bruce Springsteen” (March 21) and “VH1 All Access Spotlight: U2” (March 28).
