Call for Applications
Update Editor and
Chair of the Update Editorial Committee
Applications are being accepted for the combined post of Editor and Chair of the Editorial Committee of Update: Applications of Research in Music Education. The Editor will begin duties on August 1, 2008 and will continue until July 31, 2014.
Qualifications
1. The applicant must be a member of the Society for Research in Music Education.
2. The applicant must be a professional music educator and nationally recognized researcher, as demonstrated by academic training in research and by an ongoing record of research publication in high-quality journals.
3. The applicant must have had successful music teaching experience in elementary or secondary schools.
4. The applicant must have at least two years’ experience either as an Editor (or Chair of an Editorial Committee) or as a member of an Editorial Committee for a professional music or music-related journal.
5. The applicant must assure the Music Education Research Council (MERC) that he or she is willing and able to volunteer the time necessary to carry out the duties of Editor and Chair.
6. The applicant must assure MERC that his or her employing institution will support the applicant’s term as Editor and Chair with release time, use of facilities, and the funding of an editorial assistant averaging 10 hours per week. This support must be assured for the entire 6-year term.
7. If elected, the applicant must resign any other national leadership post currently held in the Society for Research in Music Education.
The applicant must provide the MERC Chair with the following documentation in support of his or her candidacy.
A. A complete Curriculum Vitae, to include degrees earned, employment history, publications, presentations at professional meetings, offices held in the profession, and any other information that might help to establish the applicant’s qualifications
B. A letter from the applicant that assures MERC of his or her willingness to commit to the position in terms of both duties and time
C. A letter from the applicant’s employer assuring the level of support stipulated in Qualification 6
D. Three letters of recommendation from nationally recognized researchers in music that testify to the applicant’s qualifications
Items A through C must be sent electronically to Dr. Martin Bergee, MERC Chair, at mbergee@ku.edu no later than April 1, 2008. Paper applications will not be accepted.
Applicants must request that letters of recommendation (Item D) be sent electronically and directly to Martin Bergee at mbergee@ku.edu no later than April 1, 2008. All documents must be sent as an attachment in Word Document (.doc) or Portable Document (.pdf) format. A candidate or candidates will be selected during the MERC meeting at the 2008 MENC Biennial National Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. From this candidate or these candidates, the National Executive Board of MENC at its summer 2008 meeting will confirm or select the new Editor and Chair of the Update Editorial Committee.
