The Nebraska School Activities Assoc. hosts our State Music Contest. They have the orchestras currently scheduled to perform in a gym. I have never had my orchestra perform in this type of setting. They have informed us that there will be a shell to help the sound project forward, but I am worried that soft passages will be lost. many of the orchestras in Nebraska are string orchestras between 12 and 30 students. Only about 3 schools use a full orchestra and they are worried about winds over balancing with the strings in the gym. I have the luxury of being the band director as well and the bands have traditionally been in the gym, but I do know that string orchestras are very a very different ensemble. Any suggestions for performing in a gym would be greatly appreciated.
