I do not believe that all students should audition for honor groups. Because of this I do not offer extra credit or any grade. I motivate students to get motivated about any of these extra events by talking about how important it is to play with other musicians outside of the school ensemble. Not only does this represent our school but it gives them a chance to perform different music. This really works.
However, I do not ask students who are not already somewhat motivated in my own program.
