Good question. I think you have the answer in your question. Your job is to provide a quality music education for your students. You do this not only by challenging them, but also by putting them into situations that breed success. A poor marching band performance does nothing to help the program.
Talk to your super., and put it in a "this is better for the kids and the program" format. Don't mention YOUR preferences (no marching experience, you want to focus on concert band, etc). Also, keep in mind, if you're trying to recruit, poor public performances don't help much.
Hopefully, your super. listens to you. If he keeps the pressure on though, there isn't much you can do.
