MENC: The National Association for Music Education Publishes Lessons In American Music

Debra Kay Robinson Lindsay Presents Lessons for Teaching the Music of American Composers in New Resource

RESTON, VA (May 3, 2006) --Anyone interested in American music will appreciate Lessons in American Music, a new collection for teaching elementary and middle-school students about American composers and the national anthem. Published by MENC: The National Association for Music Education, this spiral-bound book, convenient for use at the piano, is an all-in-one resource for teachers. This new resource provides thirty-one lesson plans loaded with activities, assessments, ideas, and helpful tips for teaching students the music of America™s history.

The book™s author is Debra Kay Robinson Lindsay, an award-winning music teacher in the Fairfax County (Virginia) Public School District and president-elect of the Virginia Elementary Music Educators Association. In the book, Robinson Lindsay explores the music of Stephen Foster, Scott Joplin, and the first American composer, William Billings. The book incorporates history lessons, reproducible music for soprano recorder, voice, and piano, and a variety of classroom and individual activities. Lessons with a special focus on The Star-Spangled Banner are featured.

I tried to think of all the ways a music teacher might use this book, said Robinson Lindsay in an interview. Also, there is more than one way in which children can learn. My book offers a lot of ways to reach them.

This is a valuable resource for the busy music teacher whose curriculum includes units on American composers and their music, said David E. Circle, music coordinating teacher for the Blue Valley (Kansas) School District and president of MENC. Everything the teacher will need from initial presentation to activities to assessments for the 32 lessons is included “ it™s a must for every fourth-through-sixth-grade music teacher™s library.
