Prepare to Play: October Teaching Music Spotlights Repertoire

With autumn underway, music educators of all disciplines are settling into their school routines and making plans for the year ahead. The October issue of Teaching Music offers tips and stories that inform as well as inspire.

The cover story is “Focus on Repertoire: Finding Your Musical Oasis." It discusses ways to make one of a music teacher’s toughest jobs a little easier.

The other October features are:

  • "Knowing the Score"—A guide for assessing a musical score before rehearsal starts
  • "Change Your Tempo"—Some experienced music teachers share time management tips
  • "Blind Ambition"—The Ohio State School for the Blind will take their band students to California to march in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California in January.

The magazine also includes stories about research, advocacy, and a teacher in Austin, Texas, who found a way to reach urban orchestra students.

The Upbeat section of October Teaching Music highlights news about MENC programs and news about members. Stories include:

  • MENC will present new National Honor Ensembles at Music Education Week in Washington in June 2010. The audition deadline is November 16.
  • U. S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan urges support for the arts as school districts plan for the next fiscal year.
  • Lowell Mason nominations for 2009 fellows are now being accepted.
  • The 2010 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band drum major has been selected and the national selection tour for the remaining band members kicks off this month.
  • Activate Tri-M chapters by October 31 and receive a special gift.
  • Details about the World’s Largest Concert® (WLC®)  including the song lineup.
