Orchestra Academy Will Explore the Use of Eclectic Styles

Martin Norgaard, assistant professor of music education at Georgia State University in Atlanta, will bring diverse string methodology to the 2012 Orchestra Academy at Music Education Week. The dates are Sunday, June 24, and Monday, June 25, in Baltimore, Maryland.
The Orchestra Academy focus is “Adding Eclectic Styles to Your Orchestra.” The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) presents 2012 Music Education Week June 22–25, in Baltimore, Maryland.
Professional development academies there will give attendees the opportunity to explore a particular discipline in depth as they interact one-on-one with clinicians and network with their peers.
Norgaard, the Orchestra Academy presenter, is the author of ten jazz string method books including Jazz Fiddle Wizard and Jazz Fiddle/Viola/Cello Wizard Junior, and is the composer of several string orchestra pieces. His most recent research, a qualitative investigation of the cognitive processes underlying improvisation, appears in the Journal of Research in Music Education (JRME).
A frequent clinician at state, national, and international conventions such as the Singapore International String Conference, The Midwest Clinic, and NAfME, he currently serves on the national board of American String Teachers Association as Member-at-Large.
Participants will learn how to introduce authentic eclectic styles in the classroom by playing an authentic-style piece. They will also learn to recreate stylistically appropriate learning environments.
In the two-day academy, participants will
- Learn to teach fiddling using authentic aural models
- Create fiddle tune variations
- Improvise jazz solos
- Learn to use amplification to create an authentic rock performance.
Participants also will learn how to share 21st-Century skills with their students.
