In Memoriam: MENC Acknowledges Recent Member Deaths

Eugene (Gene) Morlan, who, during a 29-year career at MENC, was acting executive director as well as assistant executive secretary, associate executive secretary, and director of professional programs, recently died. He taught high school music and also taught at Ohio University in Athens, the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, and James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Morlan founded and conducted of the Woodstock (VA) Community Chorus. He also conducted and performed in shows for the Army Special Service in the Pacific Theater in World War II. For 20 years he was founding conductor and musical director of the 100-voice Mormon Choir of Washington, DC, and more recently performed for patients at nursing centers and assisted-living facilities in Northern Virginia.

The passing of Lincoln Igou of New Paltz, New York, was another death of note. An 80-year member, he MENC’s oldest active living of member at the time of his 2010 death. He was an Instructor of Music at Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana and was a former president of the Louisiana Music Educators Association. From 1946-1976 Igou was the professor of Music/Humanity at the State University of New York (SUNY) in New Paltz. Igou also helped to establish the first nationally approved accredited music therapy program in New York.
