BMI John Lennon


The 2010 BMI John Lennon Songwriting Program offers:

  • One $10,000 Scholarship
  • Two $5,000 Scholarships
     

This scholarship is awarded to the best original composition for vocal-instrumental performance with the broadest popular appeal. Open only to current students or recent alumnus/alumna at any institution with an active MENC Collegiate chapter. Students may enter by submitting entries to the campus Collegiate Chapter advisor.

The deadline to submit entries to your campus MENC Collegiate chapter advisor is:

  • December 1, 2009

BMI 2009 Winners

Samantha Cox, director of the competition, announced the winners of the BMI Foundation’s 12th Annual John Lennon Scholarships, a program that recognizes the best and brightest young songwriters between the ages of 15 and 24. Students at any institution with an MENC Collegiate chapter were eligible for consideration by submitting the entry to his or her chapter advisor.

Jacqueline Wisot, a musician and songwriter currently attending Belmont University, won first place and a $10,000 scholarship for her song “Firefly.” The Pennsylvania native was honored during the BMI Pop Awards ceremony held May 19 in Los Angeles.

Two Catawba College student tied for second place: Maryland native Katie Bragg won for her song “unbreakable,” and Texan Mason Jewett won for “Devil Sunday”; each received a $2,500 scholarship. There was also a tie for third place: Weber State University student Sean Bishop (one of the MENC Finalists from Utah) was awarded a $2,500 scholarship for the song “The Real Me,” and co-scribes Dusti Kemp and Jessica Drake were each awarded $1,250 scholarships for “Time to Miss You.”

Congratulations to MENC’s 2009 BMI John Lennon state finalists!

Committee Chairs met early in January and selected finalists from their states. The finalists were sent to MENC, and we forwarded them to BMI for the next round of adjudication.
